Greek Recycling Program

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) and Greek Life collaborated with the University to develop a pilot project that provides the Greek Community with a new opportunity to join the ‘Green' movement.

The Greek Recycling Program will launch this Friday, April 3. USG, the Interfraternity Council (IFC), and the Panhellenic Council (PHA) are scheduled to distribute 150 recycling bins to over 30 Greek houses in the off-campus area.

“This initiative is the first of its kind in the off-campus area. It's exciting to see an entire community set in motion such an important sustainability effort,” said Jordan Davis, co-creator of the program and USG Deputy Director of Greek Affairs.

The concept of Greek recycling was initially proposed fall quarter during a Greek service retreat. Davis then met with Brett Mayo, the Director of Sustainability to discuss the feasibility of such a program. Together they teamed with Greek Life, the Department of Facilities Operations and Development (FOD), and RUMPKE to coordinate and implement what came to be known as the Greek Recycling Program in just two quarters.

FOD and the Office of Student Life are donating the recycling bins and Facility Management and Logistics is providing the distribution truck. Drop-off times and locations this Friday are as follows:

8:30 - 9:00am - 15th and High, Parking lot of Alpha Tau Omega

9:15 - 9:45 am - 15th and Indianola, Parking lot of Chi Omega

10:00 - 10:30 am - 15th and Summit, Parking lot of Delta Delta Delta

10:45 - 11:15 am - 17th and Iuka - Drive way of Alpha Gamma Rho

Plans are currently being finalized with RUMPKE to collect the recycling each week. Once the contract is signed, participating Greek houses will receive weekly recycling pick-up, free of charge, on behalf of IFC and PHA.

“By coming together we were able to take a step forward in this green movement and I believe that this step should make it easier for many more to follow,” Davis said.
