Kristin's Story Event
The Undergraduate Student Government is collaborating with the Ohio State University Chapters of Alpha Chi Omega and Delta Delta Delta to present a lecture titled Kristin's Story: A Mother's Account of Acquaintance Rape and Depression on Monday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. in Mershon Auditorium. Kristin's Story is a rape education program designed to raise awareness about sexual assault and depression among college students.
“These are issues that affect college students much more than most people would feel comfortable admitting. That is why it is vital to step out of our comfort zone and deal with these topics, especially at a university where 17% of students have reported being under depression,” said Julia Kennedy, coordinator for Kristin's Story.
Kristin Cooper was a 20-year-old college student in Alpha Chi Omega who committed suicide shortly after she was raped by a friend in 1995. Her mother, Andrea Cooper, once a Delta Delta Delta, now shares Kristin's tragic story with college students across the nation.
"I am sharing this because I hope by telling Kristin's story that other lives will be saved, and other young women will not be victims of acquaintance rape, and that those suffering from depression, for any reason, will get help," Andrea Cooper said.
Preceding the event, USG's Safety and Wellness Committee will present statistics on the prevalence of sexual assault and depression on Ohio State's Campus. USG also invited the Younkin Center, the Wellness Center, the Student Advocacy Center, and University Housing to distribute information afterward on how students can seek help.
The presentation is funded by the Alpha Chi Omega and Delta Delta Delta sororities. USG financed both the venue and the marketing for the event.
Free tickets to the event can be picked up at the Information Desk in the Sheunion. To get tickets for an entire group, e-mail Julia Kennedy at kennedy.433@osu.edu.
