New Police Substation Opens

A new police substation shared by both the Columbus Division of Police and the University Police opened its doors Friday.  The facility is the result of a commitment between The Ohio State University and the City of Columbus to increase neighborhood safety and strengthen community relations.

“This policing center brings together law enforcement agencies and community organizations in an innovative and unique way to increase safety and visibility of police officers in the University and Weinland Park area,” said Mayor Michael B. Coleman.

Located on 11th Ave, between 4th and Summit Streets, the facility serves the Ohio State University District and Weinland Park areas.  It provides office space for University Police to hold safety meetings and offer crime prevention programs.  Community organizations and residents will also be able to utilize the building's additional meeting rooms.  Ohio State and the City shared the cost of $4.4 million.

Named Moody Hall Neighborhood Policing Center, the building honors two prominent members of the community; Tom Moody and Bill Hall.  Moody was the 44th mayor of Columbus and Hall was a vice president of student affairs at Ohio State until his death in 2005.

Former OSU President Karen A. Holbrook first announced the idea of the substation in 2004.  She worked with the Undergraduate Student Government, city leaders, and the police to finalize the details of the proposal.

During the design phase, though, problems with the blueprint put a halt on the project.  Former USG President Kate Christobek along with other city leaders put pressure on the city to follow through with the substation.  According to Christobek, USG also played a vital role in deciding what the university-allotted sections of the substation should be utilized for.  More than two years after the initial proposal, construction began in June of 2007.

Mayor Coleman, OSU President Gordon Gee, and USG President Peter Koltak joined with other community leaders to celebrate the opening of the building Friday.
