USG Hosts Fourth Annual Safety Summit

February 10, 2009

STUDENT GOVERNMENT HOSTS SAFETY SUMMIT

COLUMBUS -- The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) at the Ohio State University is hosting the fourth annual Community Safety Summit on Thursday, February 12 at 7 p.m. in the Grand Lounge of Longaberger Alumni House off Olentangy River Road.  Safety officials from Ohio State and the city of Columbus, as well as students, will convene to discuss what initiatives should be taken to improve safety on and off campus.

“We want to focus on students' perceptions of their safety and find out where we are falling short so we can take the necessary steps towards improvement,” said Julia Kennedy, coordinator of the Safety Summit.

The summit will commence with a presentation by USG's Safety and Wellness Committee on the results of a recent survey designed to evaluate students' safety concerns.  Following the presentation, Columbus City Councilman Andrew Ginther will deliver a speech.  Attendees will then be divided into groups and assigned safety topics to propose solutions to or offer their feedback on.  The topics include:  panhandling, surveillance cameras, lighting, transportation, escort services, and theft.

USG plans to work with the city of Columbus and the university to ensure that the suggestions generated from this summit are thoroughly researched and eventually implemented.

“Especially with the economic climate, it is even more important for the entire community, the University as well as the City, to work collaboratively. We are doing well, but we can definitely do better,” Kennedy said.
